Friday, September 26, 1997 ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) -- An unidentified,wingless object traveling at high speed passed dangerously close to a Swissairjetliner between Philadelphia and Boston, the airline said Friday.
The pilot and copilot gave U.S. investigatorsdifferent descriptions of the object that passed about 50 yards from theBoeing 747 after it had taken off from Philadelphia on Aug. 9, said theairline.
The pilot told the U.S. National TransportationSafety Board that the object as long and wingless, but the copilot saidit was more spherical, Swissair spokesman Erwin Schaerer said.
The incident took place at 23,000 feet.The plane's final destination was Zurich.

An unidentified object narrowly misseda SWISSAIR Boeing 747 while the aircraft was at 23,000 feet, passing inair space between Philadelphia and New York, on Aug 9, Swiss radio reportedthis morning. Major newswires are taking the story and moving it. The pilotdescribed the object, which passed within 50 yards of the aircraft, as"white, elongated and without wings," and strongly rejected U.S. explanationsthat the object was a weather balloon, the radio report said. The objectwas moving at very high speeds, Swissair spokesman Erwin Schaerer tellsthe NTSB. The plane was Zurich-bound, from Philadelphia.
