Amarillo Incident of 1947

Mystery Device Explodes, Burns

Amarillo, Tex., July 14 (INS) A weird and unidentified device of metal, wires, batteries and condensers which exploded and burned in Amarillo was ordered placed under lock and key by U.S. army intelligence officers Sunday night.

The device - a metal box about two by three feet and six inches deep was found Saturday night in an Amarillo alley after it was shattered by a minor explosion.

Police said they believed the object had been placed in the alley and had not dropped from the air. A name plate on the side read: Barber Colman corporation, Illinois.

Dallas military authorities told police to keep the box hidden until further orders.
