The Cincinnati Post
July 11, 2002

One person is missing but two others were rescuedafter a large helicopter crashed into Brookville Lake in Franklin County,Ind., Wednesday afternoon.

Divers suspended searching for the missing manas darkness fell over the Mounds Recreational Area of the lake, where theSikorsky S58, a large chopper used for construction projects, went intothe water shortly af ter 5:15 p.m. They planned to resume their searchthis morning.

The two men rescued were conscious when they werepulled from the aircraft. One was taken to University Hospital and wasin fair condition this morning. The other was taken to Fayette MemorialHospital in Connersville, Ind., which refused to release information abouthim this morning.

Police were not releasing the names of any ofthe men early today pending notification of their families.

Police said the missing man was presumed dead. The only way he could have survived is if he is in an air pocket underwater, said Indiana Conservation Officer Bill Beville.

The helicopter, owned by Midwest Helicopter Airways,Inc., of Hinsdale, Ill., was en route to Lebanon, Ohio, when it went down.

The cause of the crash is still unknown. But severalonlookers speculated it might have hit power lines.

''As you can see, the area right over where itfell is full of lines,'' said Jonathon Wines, of Connersville, Ind.

Beville said it could be a week before the helicopterwreckage can be pulled from the lake, which is 30 feet deep. It might requireseveral days to get salvage equipment to the crash site.

The area of Brookville Lake where the helicopterhit has been closed off. The Environmental Protection Agency put absorbentmaterial in the water to contain fuel leaking from the wreckage.

Access to the Mounds Recreation Center, the parkinglot near the recreation center and its beaches are expected to be closedtoday. Debris from the aircraft has been washing up on that beach.

The rest of Brookville Lake will remain open,Beville said.
